  • 91.9 millions Euro for new EC regiobal programmes in the Mediterranean

    <p>The European Commission has allocated &euro;91.9 million to the Mediterranean region under its 2010 Regional Action Programme, with nine regional projects and programmes financed in sectors ranging from Transport to Environment, Confidence Building Measures to Business Financing, and Justice and Home Affairs.</p> <p>&nbsp;The actions identified in the Regional Action Programme result from the conclusions of the Euromed Ministerial Conferences and/or are the continuation of previous EC regional programmes. The programme covers the Southern countries of the European Neighbourhood Policy, namely Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Syria and Tunisia. It was approved on August 4, 2010.</p> <p>&nbsp;The following programmes are more particularly relavent for the water sector: </p> <ul> <li>Euromed Programme on Sustainable Water Management and depollution of the Mediterranean (&euro;15 million): intends to promote dissemination of sustainable water management policies and practices in the region in the context of increasing water scarcity. It will address four interlinked issues (water governance, water and climate change, water financing and water demand management) and three sources of pollution (municipal waste, municipal wastewater, industrial emissions) while supporting the initiative for the de-pollution of the Mediterranean. </li> <li>ENPI-South Global Allocation:will ensure quick commitments on small actions and projects and enable the European Commission to act with flexibility. Among many others, it finances the regional Ministerial Conferences. </li> <li>Partnership for Peace (&euro;10 million): aims to promote communication and mutual understanding in the Middle East Peace Process.   • Tunisia: Three desalination plants for south Tunisia in 2011

    <p><strong>The Tunisian government announced on 30 August 2010 that Soci&eacute;t&eacute; Nationale d'Exploitation et de Distribution des Eaux (SONEDE), the national water agency, had developed a plan for the creation in 2011 of three water desalination plants in the Gabes region at a total cost of more than TND 14 million (US$ 9.4 million).</strong>&nbsp;<br /><br />These projects will benefit the people of Zarrat, Matmata and Manzel Habib, aiming to meet the growing need of the population with drinking water, especially in summer, and improve quality.&nbsp;<br /><br />In July this year, the &euro; 70 million Djerba desalination contract was awarded by SONEDE and the Ministry of Agriculture &amp; Water Resources to the Groupe Princesse Befesa. It covers design, construction and operation of the plant for 20 years on the island of Djerba in the Gabes gulf.&nbsp;</p>

The result is innovative, lasting local solutions that aim to bring choice and change to those who need it most.&nbsp;<acronym title="International Development Research Centre">IDRC</acronym>&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.idrc.ca/en/ev-155392-201-1-DO_TOPIC.html">Climate Change and Water Program</a>&nbsp;(CCW) helps&nbsp;developing country researchers to understand the consequences of climate change on water resources and to find ways to improve the ability of citizens and governments to adapt to the changing environment.</p> <p> The purpose of CCW&rsquo;s Adaptation H<sub>2</sub>O&nbsp;Graduate Research Awards is to build the research capacity in developing countries by providing awards to graduate students working on subjects related to climate change and water.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>NUMBER, VALUE, AND DURATION OF AWARDS</strong><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p> &nbsp; <ul> <li>A maximum of seven awards, each with a maximum value of CA$15,000, are available this year.
